Bulletin Boards for Learning

Bulletin Boards

When you have VELCRO® brand loop fabric bulletin boards, your options for classroom displays expand considerably, especially if you have VELCOIN® fasteners on hand. Following are some ideas for decorating and using school bulletin boards, but these ideas can be applied to the full range of educational display needs in the company meeting space, religious education center or community art center.

  • Attach posters using VELCOIN® fasteners
  • Staple small lights around the perimeter of the bulletin board and cover the wiring with a diaphanous or other material that lends itself to three-dimensional value
  • Use wide ribbon—some are decorated already—instead of paper borders; it’s easier to store and can be used repeatedly
  • Use flannel cutouts to encourage creative play or provide kinesthetic opportunities; for instance, kids can make up stories for their classmates “on the fly” while moving the cutouts around on the bulletin board. This provides a visual for the audience and a multi-sensory channel for the young storyteller.
  • Use large words or letters to encourage language making. Attach these to the VELCRO® board with VELCOIN® fasteners and invite students to build new words, sentences, stories or poems with them. And just because they are officially words and letters doesn’t mean they can’t be used as simple visual components; allow for any kind of manipulation of the language, even if the alphabet is used to create a sailboat or dinosaur.
  • Display boards can also be game boards. Have a custom board made to provide vertical game playing space—this can be as simple as the red and black squares needed for checkers or chess—or order a display board with a single-color VELRO® covering and attach game playing elements made with paper, plastic, board or fabric. Encourage students to play by the rules, or simply let them experiment with and develop their innate lateral-thinking genius as they come up with completely new ways to use the game components.

Hopefully, you’ll find some of these suggestions helpful. Contact us if you need more information about creating display boards for your classroom so you can capitalize on these and other ideas soon.
